So after two WONDERFUL visits to New Orleans I've decided to take the leap and move from California. Although I'd love to stay in the French Quarter, I just think it would be a hassle trying to find parking, especially during Mardi Gras. Anyways, I was looking up apartments and saw a couple ON Rampart street (park side). I've been told to stay on the French Quarter side but do you think if I stayed actually on Rampart and not behind, it would be alright also?? If you're facing the park, it's on the right side a couple blocks.

Not the safest part, should be ok I'm guessing. You must be used to watching your back...

I used to park across Rampart from the police station, basically near the cemetery and the Iberville projects, for an entire summer and would walk back to my car late late at night, nothing ever happened. It wasn't the smartest move but I was young and worked in the Quarter and didn't really want to pay to park anywhere. It's smarter to walk in a group anywhere over there, and yes, definitely be alert of your surroundings. I have no idea if the area is better or has even changed since Katrina; back then it wasn't the best, but New Orleans is New Orleans...I find people mind their own business.

What about the Marigny or Bywater? You should be able to find a comparable place and parking will be less of an issue.

Marigny and CBD are my ideal locations, within walking distance to everything but not right smack in the middle of it all. About how far a walk is it from Bywater to the French Quarter?? I definitely always try to be aware of my surroundings, good or bad neighborhood. I just don't want to be in anything too bad!

Bywater is further by walking, The Marigny is just north across from Esplanade.
