Recent correspondence with friends in the area has informed me that many buildings in New Orleans and the surrounding area remain abandoned. Understanding that many of these are condemned, what are the laws concerning moving into one of these houses with the intent to fix it up and make it your own? I've looked into Louisianan Sqatter's Rights but there are a lot of gray areas and I'd like to hear from someone rather than guess based off of limited research.

Preservation Resource Center The Preservation Resource Center might be a good place to start.

New Orleans is not efficient in handling condemned property - never has been. The blighted property issues have been around for AGES and Katrina didn't help. You can learn a lot about the City's property issues by going to www.nola.com and searching "blighted".

Good luck.

Yikes! The housing industry in NOLA and the corruption that is historical involved in rehab continues to boggle the mind. New Orleans Affordable Homeownership leaves lingering headaches | NOLA.com

Did we learn NOTHING from Katrina? It makes my heart sad.
