Hi all -

I live in New Orleans, but I'm going home for the holidays. I'd like to get my family some nice gifts that you can only get in New Orleans -- nothing tacky (i.e. probably not most of the stuff you can buy in those terrible shops along Decatur, etc.), but something thoughtful. Any ideas?

Those be nice or leave signs are really popular. Not sure where the guy's studio is, but he has other stuff as well.

I have a friend that always wants me to bring her Beignet mix and Community Coffee. Maybe add some mugs and powdered sugar in a nice basket.

Go to the Louisiana Music Factory and pick up some New Orleans sounds. Kermit Ruffins is a good choice, and he has a terrific Christmas cd out now.

Brass Bands (Rebirth) are good. If you like cool jazz, the new Lance Ellis cd is great.

Some of those shops near the French Market have interesting books. In fact, there are all kinds of art work by the local artists, some very affordable.

Fleur de lis jewelry.

Cook books.

Pat O'Brien Hurricane Mixes.

Barbeque Shrimp mixes (you can find them at Walgreen's cheaper).

Magazine Street has a wonderful little French shop called Belle Aux Choses (misspelled, I'm sure), and they sell little linens and lavendar-filled sachet pouches with embroidered fleur de lis motifs on them. Very affordable and very nice.

Here you go: Dr Bob Folk Art He's in the Marigny.

You should hit Magazine Street, there are lots of shops that would accommodate a variety of tastes.

Dr Bob is a copycat artist trying to ride the fame and fortune of the original bluedog artist George Rodrigue.

Another good local artist is Michalopoulos
