As far as opportunities for student and indie film acting goes... NOLA does not compare to the huge and highly competitive student/indie world of NYC and LA. NOLA is much, much smaller. Being small also means it's much less competitive, but the opportunities that do exist are less interesting.

I would bet that Austin has a bigger indie/student world than NOLA, but never having been there I can't really say. Have no idea about Atlanta. But the only real student films in NOLA are UNO films, and UNO is not the same caliber of film school as UT-Austin - which is not the same caliber as NYU/Columbia in NYC. Local film schools naturally drive the local student film industries.

Maybe you'd be interested in finding small roles in the Hollywood-style productions that come to NOLA (they don't fill all the spots with out-of-towners simply for financial reasons) rather than bigger roles in student/indie stuff? In that case, NOLA would probably offer opportunities for roles that in NYC/LA would be way more competitive.

But, since you're not relying on finding paying gigs, I would think NYC/LA would be far more interesting from an actors standpoint.

I'm trying to gain experience. Realistically, what can my expectations be for getting roles in LA/NYC student/indie films versus small roles in Hollywood-style productions in NOLA with not much of a resume? Granted I am talented, but lacking an extensive resume.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. Not familiar enough with the casting scene to give specifics. Someone else would know more.

I'm an actor, and Louisiana is a great place to be for a beginning actor. There are tons of small projects to get involved with. It's a just a matter of knowing people who are trying to small films. There all over down here. If you want to audition for smaller roles in big budget films, you have to get some credits then get an agent. Casting directors usually don't allow every Tom, Dick, and Harry to audition. Unfortunately, local talent is not usually considered for leads in big budget films. They usually import Los Angeles or New York talent. It sucks, but that's the way it is. However, once you've made a name for yourself in Louisiana, it increases your chances of booking gigs if you decide to move to Los Angeles or New York down the road. I hope this made sense. Good luck.
