I keep trying to move to New Orleans, but I am stuck. I am a government employee, and have applied for lots of jobs there but it seems as though someone needs to die or retire before they open a job. Has anyone made a successful transfer? I am currently in DC, where government employment is plentiful, and its frustrating. I have a great network, know the hiring process intimately, and have worked all over the country, but New Orleans is a tough nut. Any thoughts? I have a loved one I am trying to get back to due to an illness and I just can't seem to make the connection.

You might want to try in one of the suburban parishes (Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. John the Baptist, etc.)

Given the population - the math is not with you. Perhaps someplace in Texas or Florida would be more fruitful. Unless you are military or with the Army Corp of Engineers - the statistical numbers are not in your favor. Many government positions and operations moved from the Gulf Coast area after Katrina...for the obvious reasons.

Any reason you can't look for work in the private sector?

I would be happy to-- its a question of salary. Government jobs pretty much guarantee you a certain salary no matter where you go in the countyr (unless you opt to take a lower grade). In low cost of living areas like NOLa, there is no way to recoup that in the private sector. I could expect a 30K pay cut to take a similar job. I just can't do that.
