I love New Orleans... I went there all the time when I grew up in Pensacola, and I'm a lifelong Saints fan. When I lived down there, of course, I had no need to use the airport... I just drove over.
Since moving away, I've had to visit New Orleans a few times. For a conference in 2008, I drove over from my parents, then flew back to PA from the airport, using the Airport Shuttle which arrived so late to my hotel, I thought I was going to miss my flight.
Then I went down there for a Saints game, flying in/out of MSY and using the airport shuttle again... with awful, awful results. I didn't take a taxi because those were $33 one-way...
Now I'm coming back down for the same conference I had in 2008. I really, really don't want to spend the money for a taxi or take that awful shuttle. Are there any other options?
Why doesn't New Orleans have a proper two-way light rail that runs from the airport to the city center? There are so many people who visit NO that it would be used well. Are Metairie and Kenner just dead set against any such idea?

It's bound to happen. As is the BR-NO connection, I believe. If there is commuter rail between NO and BR then a stop will be at MSY, if it never happens I'm sure a lightrail will be built to serve the airport, Metry, and downtown.

Lets start with getting proper bus service.
Why this is not advertised more, I'll never know. I guess it would put the cab companies out of buisness.

The Jeff. Parish bus will take you from the airport to Tulane and Loyola every weekday. On the weekend it stops at Carrollton and you'll have to transfer to the Tulane Bus or walk over to the Canal streetcar to get downtown. It's $1.50 if you go to Carrollton, and it's $2.00 to go all the way to Loyola during the week. Even if you have to transfer to the Tulane bus on the weekend, It's only a $2.75 trip.

Gawd that brings back memories. Back in the 90s I worked at the Airport and had no car, so I had to take the bus everyday. You'll be fine, but you will see some interesting characters from time to time, (man I've got some stories). The thing about that route is that there are multiple stops so don't plan on getting there anytime soon. I don't think using the bus @11:30 is an option and if it were I wouldn't recommend it. The bus lets you off near Elks which will be a lonely, quiet walk to cross to Canal. Someone tried to rob me there once, but was deterred when some guy came around the corner. During the day it would be fine, but not that late at night. It's been twenty years since I've been on the route so keep that in mind, but if I had to do it tomorrow, I wouldn't be jumpy about it at all.
