Hi. I'm considering a move to New Orleans from Brooklyn, NY sometime between June and November of this year. I'm trying to determine how much I will need to plan on for rent, and where I should be looking. I don't have many requirements. Just looking for the cheapest place that is in a reasonably safe area and not totally run-down or infested with bugs (those can all be issues when looking for a cheap place in NYC).

I am a single male, either a studio or 1 bedroom is fine. No need for tons of space. I don't care how close I am to bars, night life, etc. or how hip and trendy the area is. If I can get some groceries and do my laundry, that's good enough for me. Not sure what it's like to drive in New Orleans, but I'd like to be a 30 minute or less drive from the French Quarter.

Basically, just looking for the cheapest possible place that the average single, late-20's male could come home to and not hate. I'm not looking for something super nice to impress people, and I don't want to feel like I'm in the worst apartment in the worst neighborhood in the city. If somebody asked me about my place, I'd want my response to be, "well...it's ok...not great, but it's cheap".

So, with those thoughts in mind, what would be a realistic price range? Where would be some places to look at when I'm poking around Craigslist or an apartment search website? What would be some places to stay away from?

Thanks!!!

You can find good studio/1 bedrooms in the area for around $600-800 a month. I would recommend living in Metairie, which is right next to New Orleans and less than a 30 min drive to the French Quarter. Metairie has more housing, shopping, grocery stores, and parks...things like that. Here are some websites to check out.

The cost of housing depends on how many more of you move down here from NYC or the Bay area.

Metairie does not have more parks. More national retail, New Orleans retail is focused on local business.

I live Uptown New Orleans for $700

Thanks for your thoughts all. I'll plan on $600-800. It's good to have a range since I don't know the area...I'll assume that anything less than $600 is probably a dump or in a bad area, and anything beyond $800 is probably more than my meager bachelor life requires
