Is there a reason that many rentals in New Orleans have "washer dryer hookups" instead of actual washers and dryers? This is just odd to me as I have never lived in a place that didn't have a coin operated basement laundry or individual units in the apt/house. I have also noticed that some locations ask you to bring your own fridge! This is just foreign to me. I mean, in Germany they don't usually provide any kitchen cabinets or appliances, but my experience in the US hasn't prepared me for this. Is there something I am missing?

Much of the housing stock was built before the washer and dryer was a common appliance in homes. I do agree that all units should come with washers and dryers in them though.

Yes, I normally target older homes to live in. My current building was erected in 1927, and the majority of my former residences were either 19th or early 20th century-- long before washers and dryers existed in their modern iteration. I just wondered if this was a "thing"-- that I should shift my expectations and start lugging a a washer dryer combo from place to place. The fridge thing I just don't get.

In New Orleans not many places give you a washer / dryer / fridge in your apartment. You pretty much need to move in everything but the kitchen sink sometimes. Craiglist has good deals on W/D & some people will deliver.

I've never lived anywhere that I had to bring a fridge. As for washer/dryer hookups, I'd imagine that most of those places will have laundromats nearby, if not laundry on site.

If they dont provide a fridge that tells me they are kind of ghetto landlords. But lots of places usually dont provide a washer and dryer.

A few friends of mine that have lived in a Small apartment 4-plex, 8-plex, or a duplex - had to provide their own fridge & washer/dryer. The ones that lived in the larger apartments I can't remember if the fridge was provided. I guess it all depends on who owns the property.
