Now that the days are longer and the weather is nice, the gf and I are looking to do more outdoorsy stuff (at least until the weather becomes unbearable). We have bikes and are interested in riding a trail we heard about in City Park. I read about this trail a few years ago so don't quite remember where this "trail" is located but I believe its the old south golf course cart paths that the park has allowed to go back to nature so to speak. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Does this trail/path exist and is it open to bikers? Any other trails in the park? This trail appeals to us b/c of its primitive/woodsyness.
Thanks for any help, suggestions etc. Btw, where does one access this trail? We'll be driving to the park.

I think the trial you are talking about is called the Couturie forest. Its on Harrison avenue(you can just google Couturie forest or go to neworleanscitypark.com) and people do bike ride in it (it might not be allowed, not sure, but no one cares or enforces it if it is not allowed). I used to ride on it and I see poeple riding on it still today. Also in the trail there is a hill(tallest one in New Orleans) that has a nice deck on top. The trail might not be that long (its a good distance though)but I think it is the only wooded trail in the park.
But you can take a seperate bike path thats along Wisner Blvd and Bayou st. john which takes you to the lake, it is right along a 40 mph road though.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know what you're taking about, the Arboreteum off of Harrison right by the traffic circle. I never thought to ride there b/c I didn't think it was allowed.

Im actually thinking about the old South golf course in the park. The park closed that course, but I read that they encourage and allow use of the cart paths for biking, jogging etc. I'm not sure if this is correct however and where I would access this path. Maybe on Fillmore near Wisner? Was just hoping someone on this board would be familiar with this. Thanks again for the other suggestion though.

The North Course is the only one that is still in service. The East, West and South courses have all been abandoned. The East and West courses are probably what you're looking for. If you pull up Google Maps, you can see the network of old cart paths that exist from Filmore all they way down to I-610.

The South course was located south of I-610. It covered a much smaller area never had cart paths. Currently it's 100% green space. There is a asphalt walking/jogging path that was built around "Big Lake" that comprised some of the old course.
