My brother, sister, and I (ages 21, 26, 30) will be in New Orleans next week. We'd like to rent a car just one day and take a day trip to some smaller towns or countryside nearby. Any recommendations for some small towns with a cool cajun or creole feel, or some bayou/swamp areas to drive through? I'd just like to come away with it saying, "man, I had a fun time in rural Louisiana."

We would NOT prefer a super touristy area, or a day-long guided tour, and we'd prefer not to have to drive more than, say, 90 minutes to get there (although I'm fine driving around some once we're there). I heard that the Houma area has some stuff along those lines? Also, any restaurant recommendations around there, wherever you suggest going?

Thanks.

Take a ride down the roads along the bayous south of Baton rouge. that area is gorgeous. Also maybe take a day trip down to Grand Isle and check out the marshes.

I might also suggest a trip up the River Road. I like to go to the West bank and start heading up from 4th St. Really cool Antibellum plantation homes along the way, and if I'm not mistaken, a few have been converted to restaurants.

Another drive I enjoy is heading South on Belle Chasse highway. Which is HWY 23 I think? There are a few good restaurants down that road as well.
