I am planning on coming down to New Orleans in May. Will be staying for 4 days. What are the must see attractions and things to do in the city and surrounding suburbs?

Also, is it necessary to have a car while in town? Or can one get around via walking/cab/public transit?

No need for a car. Take an airport shuttle into the city (~20 bucks). The street car is all you need and walking in NO is fantastic. As far as what to do, it's pretty straightforward. Explore the French Quarter, eat a lot, street car ride up St Charles Ave, walk Magazine St, ferry ride over to Algiers Point, maybe take street car up to museum of art in city park. Oh, and catch as much live music as you can, which won't be difficult to find. Check the paper and see what looks interesting.

Staying at the JW Marriott. The map showed it being in a good location for a lot of attractions, do you agree?

We stay there or the Courtyard on St. Charles down the way when we visit. Never have to move the car and the service at the JW has been the best!

We just got back from spring break in NOLA and stayed in the quarter. The only time I used the car was checking it in at the hotel and checking out when we left. You can easily walk everywhere, use the street car, take a horse and carriage tour and they even have bike taxi's though the latter two are a little pricey. If you really don't want to spend money, street performers abound all throughout the french quarter day and night. Lots of them on Royal street and in Jackson Square, and on Decatur as well. A lot of restaurants also offer live music. There is a little piano bar called Howl at the Moon that is pretty interactive and a fun stop. Enjoy your time there, we had a wonderful time!
