Do you have the job secured? What's your budget?

You will have a really hard time finding something in your budget in a safe neighborhood. A hostel may be your best option. Good luck.

You are not going to be able to afford any "nice" areas without a roomate. If you need to be close to the Quarter, and with that budget, I would look between Claiborne Ave and Jeff Davis from the Ponchatrain Expressway down to Esplanade. Also try between St. Claude and Claiborne from Esplanade down to Poland Ave.

You might (and I emphasize might) be able to find a small studio in the Quarter or Marigny/Bywater, but that would be a longshot. You can try, but I doubt it.

You might be able to find a room but a safe apartment is going to be very difficult to find.

Forgot to mention Craigslist: To the OP: this is a website that has listings for things for different cities, this is a link to apartments in NOLA:
new orleans apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

and this is for rooms:

new orleans rooms & shares classifieds - craigslist

Looks like you will have better luck with the rooms listing.
