Moving To New Orleans Working on Navy Center- Where to Live (Metairie: rentals, houses)

I'm considering accepting a position on at Navy Center in New Orleans (2251 Lakeshore Dr). Where would you reccommend us living ( me, finance', & infant). We are ages 34 & 35. We don't do a lot of nightlife anymore, but we like eating at nice restaurants and enjoy some nice outings. We will be renting. I don't mind commuting, but it has to be under 30 minutes. I'm looking for a nice place no more than $1200 per month.

Why waste 30min of your day? Comming in from Metairie and places further out can be a real hastle and add time to your commute.

As far as being close to work any of the Lakefront neighborhoods would be ideal. This is basically everything between Leon C. Simon/Robert E. Lee and the lake. However, it can be expensive and not many rentals. Lakeview would have a similar feel and should be a little cheaper. Gentilly is cheaper still, but try to stay between Mirabeau and the lake. All of these neighborhoods are suburban in character (single family homes, driveways, big lawns, etc.) and pretty residential. The houses were built from the 50s onward with some new construction as well. Lakeview does have some commerce along Harrison Ave. and Gentilly has a few places as well, but nowhere near as plentiful as the older, more urban neighborhoods. You would be 5-10 min from work in any of these areas and also have easy access to other parts of the city.

It sounds like that's what you're looking for, but (in case I'm wrong) if you want something a little more "New Orleans", check out Faubourg St. John, City Park Triangle and Mid-City. These are denser, more walkable neighborhoods with older architecture and higher elevation. You'll still be ~10min from work.
