My girlfriend and I are going to New Orleans for the 4th of July week. I wanted advice on where to stay (upscale, clean part of town near the better nightlife). I would like to avoid getting a rental car if I can, so staying close to the better nightlife would be beneficial. Also, where is the best nightlife in town? We are interested to find the upscale/classier venues and areas, maybe do dive bars with live music just one of the nights. Could anyone enlighten me on the nightlife/bar areas and anything else that would be helpful to know about seeing.
Thanks so much for your help in advance!

Are you looking to stay in a chain hotel or a boutique? There are plenty of chain hotels along Canal street which would provide easy access to the Quarter and CBD nightlife.

Dive bars with jazz music = Frenchmen street, which is the other side of the Quarter.

Upscale nightlife - I can't really help with that but you can find all types of nightlife in the Quarter. Someone else here can help, I'm sure!

Good thing about the Quarter is that there is effectively every kind of nightlife there. I am going to assume that by upscale

Just to give you a heads up, it's going to be crowded and busy in NOLA during that time because of Essence Fest. Hotels will be booked up. I would recommend another time to visit.

As Uptown and the French Quarter are pretty far apart, perhaps the best compromise would be the Central Business District/Warehouse District which itself may have the type of atmosphere you're looking for. Many upscale-leaning chains can be found on or near Canal Street (e.g. JW Marriott, Crowne Plaza). The French Quarter is certainly charming to visit - I love it! - but Bourbon St. in particular may not be what you're looking for in terms of nightlife. You'll probably find yourself spending a fair amount of time in Uptown though lodging options there are primarily bed-and-breakfasts or otherwise small local properties.

All of these areas are fine during the day, although you are indeed in the city. If returning late night from one neighborhood to the other, it's certainly helpful to have a couple cab numbers on you rather than walk.
