My husband and I are moving from Texas for a job in Westwego this August. We are SO excited...we have visited NOLA 3 times and have fallen more and more in love with the culture and food with each visit! We've yet to visit the West Bank so we really need help in considering the areas surrounding Westwego. Here's some info on us:

My husband's hobbies are hunting, fishing, boating and shooting guns.
We would like to buy a fairly new home in the country with some acreage but not ridiculously far from civilization (price range $200-250,000)
I like to shop...Magazine Street is my fave!!
We are in our late 20's and like to go to movies and dinner...and some night life once in awhile.
We plan to start a family soon, so a safe & family friendly location is a must.
We would like to stay within a 30-40 mile radius of Westwego.
I am a histotechnologist (HTL) and hope to find employment at a hospital or clinic that has a pathology/histology lab.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!!

Ochsner is the big hospital system here.

At 200-250 you can probably buy any house in Westwego, but you said you want acreage. If you go further west on Hwy 90 I' imagine you could find a few acres close to the river. Not sure of the price tag, but you did say up to 40 miles so I'm sure you can find something.

I would go to realtor.com and search in the area around Luling.

Most of the population of the New Orleans area lives in a fairly compact area, and nowhere within the central core will be more than 15-20 miles from Westwego.

Hey Neworleansisprettygood! Thank you for the information. I will look into the Luling area. What is Westwego like compared to the other cities in Westbank? How does the population and crime rate compare? Is there much shopping or things to see or do nearby? I'm trying to get an idea of the area...

Westwego should be pretty safe. It's not the wealthiest area; like I said, 200-250 should get you just about any house in Westwego itself. But it's not an inner-city area, either. It's a mostly blue-collar suburban area. The big mall for the west bank is located in Gretna/Terrytown, where the Westbank Expressway enters Orleans parish. There's also a bridge over the river just of west of Westwego that will take you to the Elmwood area, which is a big-box Mecca. The TPC (Tournament Players Club) is adjacent to Westwego; they hold the PGA tourney here. There is also a new racetrack very nearby, so if your husband has a sports car he can go play Richard Petty on the weekends. Just south of Westwego is Bayou Segnette, where you can swim in a wave pool, rent a cabin on a bayou, or launch your boat into the marsh with access all the way to the Gulf.

One word of warning: New Orleans has its fair share of urban snobs, and many people consider the east bank of Orleans Parish to be the only place a reasonable person would want to live. So be prepared for "Best Bank" jokes.
