We are visiting NO this weekend with a group of friends. This is my second time to visit and we mainly stayed on Bourbon (for night life) last time because we didn't know any better. I'm glad I experienced it last time just to say I did but I don't want to do it again. I'd like to find a couple bars/clubs in the Quarter that aren't as rowdy and trashy as the ones on Bourbon. We are staying at the Holiday Inn on Royal Street. I'd like a place with live music (jazz or anything really) without an abundance of drunken college kids. Any recommendations?

Frenchmen St. is your best bet. If you've been reading this board, we locals repeat that ad nauseam, but there's a good reason for that. It's just off the downriver side of the Quarter (intersects Esplanade at an angle). It's "where the locals go".

Looking it up on Google Maps I see Frenchmen St. is about a mile from where we are staying near the intersection of Royal/Canal. Would that be a bad walk down Royal as far as distance and safety or would it be better to grab a cab?

I would recommend walking. The quarter is heavily patrolled, I've always heard of pickpockets, but have never actually talked to anybody who had that happen to them. If you walk you you'll get to see a lot more of the quarter- Royal Street is known for its antique shops and art galleries.

I should also mention that all of the live music clubs are just in the first few blocks coming from Decatur.

Frenchman St is great. If you want to try walking the other way, cross Canal St by the casino and continue upriver to Lucy's, Howlin Wolf, etc.

Everytime I go to Frenchmen I start at Chart Room and bar hop (stopping at maybe mollys in the market) until I get to Frenchmen.
