A group of us are in the midst of planning a vacation through TN, MS, LA & TX next April. We have around 3 days to explore with 1 overnight somewhere. We were considering leaving New Orleans and drive to Houston then over to San Antonio and up through Austin to Dallas. Is this a good route? Any suggestions?
Thanks. Baz

There's really not all that much scenery on the route from New Orleans to Houston, though you would cross over some swamps (which I personally find beautiful). You would also get a chance to stop in Lafayette, which is the de facto capital of Cajun country.

If you want to save the "best" for last, I'd probably go north first. San Antonio and Austin have good scenery, Houston through Louisiana have the swamps and Acadiana, and north Louisiana/East Texas have the tall pines, but I've never found much to look at in Dallas.

I personally love driving over the swamps much to my surprise. It's a stark contrast to most of Texas I drive around which is dry but hilly.
