Don't go to Bourbon, go to Frenchman. On Bourbon, you'll get robbed by the tourist traps. Frenchman is where the locals go.

Also be very very careful. Do NOT put your drink down anywhere. Keep it with you at all times, even on the dance floor. And be careful what you where. For some reason, tourists tend to think it's ok to wear mini skirts and six inch heals, but if you ask me, that's asking for trouble. If you're coming during a special event especially, wear jeans and keep your wallet inside your pants against your skin with your shirt over it.

I had a coworker tell me that she was so looking forward to going out on Mardi Gras because she was new to the city and had never been before. I tried to tell her this stuff and she called me a "fuddy duddy". The day after she went, she came to me and told me I was right. That she and her husband spent an hour on Bourbon and will never ever go again. It took them three hours to find a place to park, she was elbowed in her chest, punched in the head, had her hair pulled, had her feet stepped on, was groped, and someone stole her cash from her pocket.

I don't say the stuff I do to discourage you from enjoying the area, I just suggest that you go to Bourbon during the day, and Frenchman at night. There's still lots of people and you won't believe the things you will see, but it's alot better than Bourbon at night.

i walk the streets of NYC mostly everyday and frequented the old trashy NYC back in the day so I know the ropes on street scammers and don't really tolerate them.

It's really up to you about how much fun you will have. Bourbon and Frenchman are great choices. Try the Harrah's Casino, there is a club in there that usually gets packed and is pretty classy. Also, the W hotel has a real nice club inside of it, a lot of young professionals are usually there. Fulton Street, Tchoupatoulas (in the warehouse district) are also nice spots. So, don't limit yourself to Bourbon or Frenchman.
