I had a great time in NO last weekend and I appreciate you guys' recommendations. The city was fantastic! As a mafia buff, I was curious if any of you have any information on the late Carlos Marcello who was the boss of the New Orleans crime family. When you think of the mob you think of New York and Chicago but Marcello in NO was a powerhouse along with his friend Santo Trafficante in Tampa. So I was curious if any of you NO natives have any stories or info about "Little Man" Marcello. The New Orleans crime family is now considered defunct but Carlos has family in the area that supposedly went legit. I know he was landlord to the infamous Mosca's Italian restaurant outside of New Orleans and it was a favorite of his. Also his headquarters used to be at a place called Town and Country Motel which must have been torn down. Any info is appreciated!

In the 60s on, he lived in Metairie at the end of Clifford Dr. by the lake. His brothet lived at the end of the first block off Veteran's. I lived in the 2nd block and we joked that we felt safe b/c no thief would dare mess with the Marcellos' neighborhood.

Is it true Marcello's grandson got into real estate down there? I guess that would be Joseph Marcello Jr.'s son.

Carlos Marcello owned a lot of property in New Orleans and his family inherited it. There is actually a rental company located in the Quarter called "Marcello Properties". There probably is a good chance that it is the same family. Marcello Properties in New Orleans, LA 70112 - NOLA.com

New Orleans was actually the first city in the US to have Mafia activity, starting in the 1870s I believe. Then there is also the imfamous Mafia lynching that happened in 1891 and was caused by the murder of the police chief. There is also the conspiracy that Carlos Marcello played a role in the assassination of JFK. I don't think there has been any reported activity about the Mafia in New Orleans since some people were convicted in the 1990s.

This looks like a long article about Carlos Marcello:

Another guy who may or may not be active in organized crime today is Frank Gagliano Jr. who owns Frank's Restaurant down there. Frank Sr. was Marcello's right hand man. If you dig into the JFK assassination the Marcello connection is pretty clear. Lee Harvey Oswald's uncle was connected with the NO family. Jack Ruby ran a strip joint in Dallas that was under the control of Joe Civello who answered to Carlos Marcello.

I have an Uncle that used to work for one of his many businesses . Actually several . They had quite a number of irons in the fire . I guess that made it easier to launder the illegal money .

He was just a tomato salesman. Also my college roommate parents lived on Clifford Drive in the '60's and they ran a few gambling clubs. Also there are two houses on Montecello Avenue that were part of the same 'family' and there are gun ports in the walls. One block off River road.

This isn't about Carlos Marcello, but where Monticello hits the river there are a few houses- it's listed as "Mississippi River Trail". I know there were some gambling interests in that area, are those at all related? What's their deal?

The mafia is still operating in New Orleans and other parts of South Louisiana, but I don't wish to give any details.
