That far north would be quite a drive for my husband to Hahnville. He'd like to limit his commute to 30 minutes at most. Thanks so much for all the good info you've given!!
Destrehan is just fine. Why not just live in Hahnville? That's a nice semi-rural area. Luling is similar. If you're looking for something with more commerce, then the Ormond blvd. corridor would be better. It's 10-15min away.

A north shore commute to Hahnville would be pretty hellish. You're looking at over 1 hour assuming zero traffic.

My husband and I are moving to NOLA after Christmas. We live in Baton Rouge right now, but my husband works down at Riverfront in New Orleans and we're tired of the drive.
Growing up, my mother would always tell me 'Going to New Orleans is a good way to get shot'
So I'm obviously really nervous about it. But honestly, Baton Rouge isn't very safe either (we live in te garden district, a really nice area, but I've had several dangerous instances over the last few years)
Anyway, we are looking for a safe area within a 20 minute drive of the riverfront shopping center.
My husbands friends at work tell him that we should move to Metairie, but my husband doesn't want to spend more than $800 on rent! For a 3 bedroom, mind you. I keep telling him thats ridiculous (we couldn't even pay that little in Baton Rouge. We pay nearly that much for a 2 br right now)
Does anyone know what a realistic budget would be for a safe neighborhood near New Orleans (30 minute drive, tops) ??
As well as some of the safer neighborhoods?
We have 3 daughters, but we homeschool so schools aren't a problem. I just want to feel safe when I take our dog out at night.

Well if your mom says so, it must be true. Metairie has some bad areas and some nice areas...just like New Orleans and Baton Rouge for that matter.

Where will he be working on the riverfront? At the port? Riverwalk? Corps of Engineers? Do you want something that's walkable? Do you have to have a yard and driveway? Do you want good transit access?

Broadmoor is centrally located and 10 minutes to anywhere along the riverfront. It's pretty safe and cheaper than other parts of Uptown. Look from Calhoun down to Napolean between Claiborne and Fontainbleau.

Destrhan is nice and it is not a violent community. However the chances of finding a rental under $1500 over there may not be so great. Probably find a realtor that can assist, or if you don't have one, ping me.
