I think 7,000 will last quite a while...we're a much cheaper place than NYC, though that's not telling you anything new.

I would really go to craigslist and look through housing. As I said, the Bywater is the hipster center but there are also lots of young people in the Lower Garden District and Mid-City.

Another thing is that biking is a big deal here. So you can get by with using your car once a week, or even less, if that's the sort of thing that appeals to you.
Hey do you know of any places near the French quarter that are cheap/affordable but safe? Maybe something a bike ride away? Or good 20-25 minute walk?

Look at the Bywater. I really think that comes closest to being what you're looking for. Zip is 70117, I believe, but not all parts of that zip are safe.

Look in Mid-City, it's a streetcar ride away depending on where you live. Bywater is gentrifying and demand is high.

Mid-City is generally within the I-610/I-10 loop. I don't know zip codes of New Orleans.

My experience in moving (and I've lived in a lot of different cities/towns) is that trying to find the perfect spot from out of town is impossible/not worth the effort. It will take you 6 months of living in the community to get a better feel for the right area for you (everyone has their own criteria so even the assistance offered here is just a guide). So don't stress over it, find an inexpensive, safe workable spot to start with, knowing that your going to move in 6 months to the neighborhood that is right for you.
