where are you moving from? are you going to rent a uhaul or something similar, or will it all fit in your car? how much do you need for first month's rent and a down payment? do you have a job lined up? if not, save for the necessities you will need until you find a job. Will you need to furnish your apartment? factor that in as well. Moving is very expensive.

This is one page from that report.
<GNOCDC> Prevalent Wages and Affordable Rent
Find the category you think you will get a job in and then look at the right hand column where they suggest affordable rent for that occupation/income level.

As just a general rule of thumb I have often read that a person should have at least 3-6 months worth of savings before moving somewhere new. That means that at a minimum you should have three times your normal monthly budget (rent, insurance, food, entertainment, etc).

NOLA is not a cheap city, though it can be done on the cheap if you know where to look. As far as US average cost of living, NOLA ranks above the average. Go check out a cost of living calculator like the one below to see how much you would need to make in NOLA compared to where you are now. It also shows a side by side comparison of most expenses in yoru current location compared to NOLA.

Cigarettes are cheap. I think the current tax is .36/pack.

Figure something like $800/month for a decent 1br.

Car insurance is much more expensive than average.
