How much money should I plan to spend just hanging out in the french quarter for three days. Don't plan on any major purchases or drinking. Would a hundred dollars a day be adequate?

That would be fine. Eating can be expensive or cheap.

FQ is one of those places where you can find fulfillment just strolling around. So much history and so many colorful characters. You could spend the first day wandering around deciding where to spend your $$ on the other two days. If you're not into souvenirs or drinking, I'd be concentrating on researching places to eat b/c the food is not likely something you'll encounter the splendor of anywhere else. (That was a very awkward sentence, I'm sorry!)
I could probably live on different types of Po-boys for 3 days but you really should investigate other sustenance too.

If you'd like some local art, Jackson Square has a variety of artists displaying their wares with a variety of styles at a range of prices. You should find something to suit any budget and suitcase size.

If you'd like some local music, head to Frenchmen St after about 9pm. It's a little outside FQ but not so far, few bucks by cab. Most places don't charge a cover and if you don't like what you hear in one place you can stroll to the next one. Do spare a few $$ to tip the musicians though.

I'm sure you'll find a few good ways to stretch your $100.

I recently went to the FQ and frankly I'm not sure what I would do there for three days? One walk down and back and I was done. Would surely do it once but unless you there to get drunk and run whores the street can be seen in a day. My wife had to run in several of the T-shirt shops but after one or two you will find that they all have the same things. Have a nice trip an $100 a day should be plenty with no drink and hoes'.

There's a lot more to the FQ (and the entire city for that matter) than those skanky 6 blocks of Bourbon St.

Technically, you can see all of the Quarter in a day but you probably won't be enjoying it much, sounds like you went to Bourbon and the French Market and didn't enjoy much else. New Orleans is about taking it slow, at the very least you should spend an hour at lunch.

people like road pig are the types that like to rush through everything and get them done just to say they did it. There is no way that 1 day in the quarter would be enough time to see and do everything. I spent at least 1.5 hours in the French Market alone when I visitied and that was only because I was window shopping! If I had had money I would have stayed longer. I would google and do some research, watch some videos online, and talk to folks. There are so many old/cool bars and restaurants and sight seeing to do that it should fill up your 3 days no problem. Take a steamboat ride, too!
