Hi, I will be relocating around July to work in New Orleans and I am not very familiar with the area apart from short tourist visits in the past. I would appreciate any advice for a family friendly (2 kids aged 12 - 15) place to settle and be safe. I have heard about the Northshore area. How practical is it from there to Downtown New Orleans? How about the schools in that area as well?

North shore is about (depends on where you stay)n anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.25 hrs. Schools over there are great, but I think less diverse and cookie cutter. Look into saint Charles parish, only 30 minute drive (max with traffic), and some of the best schools in the area.

I commute from the Northshore daily to the West Bank and it takes me 45-1 hour depending on traffic. The way home is an hour plus but worth because we don't have to send the kids to private schools.

I agree with Leroy217. The Northshore is safe and has great schools. Destrehan (St Charles Parish) has a nice subdivision called Ormond. I just got married, and my wife and I started our 5 year plan to relocate to the Southwest. We live in Metaire, which is much safer than living in the city, but not as safe as the Northshore. The atmosphere on the N.S. is also much more family oriented. And you're less likely to have to evacuate from a hurricane up there. Also, this is as tropical a city as it gets, so be prepared to look for an allergist when you get here. Best of luck.

What towns are located in the north shore area? My husband will be starting work in Hahnville in January. We will be moving there from Illinois near St. Louis after school lets out next summer. We are also looking for a smaller family oriented area with good schools as we have 8, 14 & 18 year old daughters. We were going to look into destrehan. How do you pronounce that by the way?

Des-tre-han. "Han" as in hand.

The northshore has Hammond, Covington, Mandeville, Slidell, those are the major towns. Destrehan is smaller and closer to Hahnville.

Mandeville is on the northshore and is the most affluent city in Louisiana and it is a wonderful place to live. Covington is also excellent. I would also look at Abita Springs and Madisonville.

I don't think that is correct. St Tammany is the wealthiest parish, though.

Well I am definitely not looking for the most affluent. I would initially be looking to rent a 3-4 bedroom, 2-3 baths hopefully with a garage and fenced yard for our two small dogs. Our budget is about $1500/month. Is the destrehan area not a good area that I need to look on the northshore? That far north would be quite a drive for my husband to Hahnville. He'd like to limit his commute to 30 minutes at most. Thanks so much for all the good info you've given!!
