Hi! My bf and I are heavily considering a move to Nola. We've visited there for years and have always loved the city. Its always been one of our favorite places. I'm a 25 year old woman and honestly have only lived in Midwestern towns and am squeamish about crime. To any locals or 20 something women living in or recently moved to new orleans, do you feel safe? I never walk around by myself but may have to get to work at night. I'm so sad that this is my concern because if it weren't I'd move there in a heartbeat. I know its every outsider's concern so only real answers please - I know its redundant and I see it asked all the time I just want a recent and more focused answer. Were looking around uptown, audobon, and garden district. Thank you!.

Unfortunately, the Garden District is going to have more crime than areas further uptown.

Between Napolean Ave and Audubon park (river side of St. Charles) as well as the Black Pearl area beyond are all very safe.

It's only safe in a car after dark IMHO. I am a 30's female and would not walk anywhere after dark in nola alone. But to each there own.

I wouldn't stress too much over it. Just have some basic street smarts and you'll be fine. Touro is not in a "bad neighborhood", but there are rougher areas that are not too far away. Walking down St. Charles alone at 3am while playing on your Iphone is not a good idea. Walking to and from your work in the morning and evening when there are more people around is not a problem at all.

Understand that some of the posters on here don't live in the city. Crime can happen anywhere, even in the daylight, even in the suburbs and even while you are in your car: 68-year-old woman carjacked in Metairie Tuesday | NOLA.com

I've lived in the greater New Orleans area my entire life and have become quite street smart from my experiences. And you are right, I don't and never will live in the city again. The woman in Metairie in the story you attached was carjacked, not "walking in Nola at night." Not sure what the 2 have to do with each other since as you said crime happens everywhere.
The OP deserves several opinions, yours and mine. Why candy coat reality? This is a dangerous city to walk around alone at night. Thats my opinion as a born and bred local and hopefully it saves OP from something bad happening. To OP my dad is from the midwest and moved here for the navy. He said its MUCH different in his opinion as well. Some good, some bad.

Thank you - I do appreciate both sides. I do not plan walking in the city myself aT night period. I'm jus looking for the safest neighborhood to come and go from. Obviously the French quarter is the French quarter and there are so many prettier parts of the city, but is it worth checking out for living?

IS the Quarter worth checking out? If that's were you want to be, and can afford it, why not? It's not the safest though, and I would choose Uptown over it.
