Hello all,

Hello All,I plan on moving to New Orleans maybe next year and had a few questions.ffirst off I'm a 26 year old black male, single, no children and have a bbackground in public safety(firefighter/EMT). I was actually in New Orleans for Hurricane Isaac disaster relief when I worked for the Red Cross and fell in love with the area and people.*1. How's the weather year round?2. Hows the singles scene?3. Public safety careers of abundance?4.Is it a progressive city?5. Crime?6. Nightlife?7. Quality of life? Thanks and look forward to your responses.

Weather is pretty mild throughout the year...none of that snow y'all get in detroit (only on rare occasions), singles scene is growing due to the influx of new people moving to the area, public safety careers are in demand with needing more cops on the force more fire fighters and emt's also because one of the biggest medical facilities is being built now and will need those upon completion. .I'd say we are becoming more progressive with the new technology jobs and a variety of other types of career based jobs that are starting to become available here, nightlife is what you make of it, there is always something going on here....... crime is an ongoing battle but it is getting better with a falling murder rate and overall crime rate falling also, Q.O.L. is great with all of the things you can immerse yourself in when it comes to New Orleans. ..fishing, hunting, boating, festivals, sports entertainment, major parks to enjoy, top 5 National Zoo, Aquarium, Casinos etc etc.... there is something here for everyone

You would have a hard time going more than 5 minutes without seeing somebody of a different race.

Sconley covered it pretty well, but I will offer one caveat to his comments. I have contacts with each of the public safety agencies (NOPD, NOFD, and NOEMS) and I can tell you that so far as Police and EMS are concerned they have plenty of openings and literally cannot hire people fast enough to keep up with attrition, so your chances of landing a job (especially with EMS if you already have your EMT or EMTP) with either of those agencies is good. NOFD is also understaffed, but there is no real push by the current mayor to shore up the numbers, but rather trim them down through attrition. There is also a huge issue with their pension fund, which our current mayor is all to eager to get his hands on and allocate as he desires rather than as defined by law. There are also a number of private EMS services such as Acadian who are always hiring.

Those true, almost indigenous groups have moved OUT of the city to surrounding suburbs and towns, and left the city to them. You can witness this by simply looking at the tapes of the unfortunate Katrina disaster, and the idiot Mayor Nagin who presided over the chaos and ignorance, who also finally got convicted of several crimes.

You won't have a problem getting a job in your field - the crime rate keeps police and fire with plenty of job options.

Smart locals however wouldn't dream about moving back in that poorly run cesspool of a municipal government.

Hyperbolic much? The city has grown 10% in just the last three years.

Appreciate the input. As you may of heard about Detroit's public safety disfunction, does New Orleans have the same problem? Police response, ems response?

having to dictate on my phone so may not make much sense. But the problems we have with that kind of stuff really don't compare to those that I've read about in Detroit.
