I will be moving to NOLA area within the nest few months. What areas have lowest crime and are pretty diverse? I am single female African American professional in the IT field. I am interviewing with several different companies now, so not sure where I will be working? Prefer to be no more than 40 minutes from N.O. in either direction. I prefer to live in a house but may have to get apartment at first. I have contacts in Metairie. Love shopping! Love to do things outdoors. Moving for the weather and culture. Leaving the cold in Michigan. Any suggestions? Low crime a must!

Do you want to live in the city or outside the city? In the city, I recommend MidCity. It's mostly a locals area with very few tourists.

No preference as long as a safe area. Safe to go out anytime run to the store maybe gas station late evening hours without fear of rape, rob, car jack. LOL I'm moving from Detroit area can you tell? LOL

Mid City does have a nice mix of Black, White, and Hispanics but certain parts are not that safe (other parts are though). Metairie along I-10 is fairly diverse. Kenner also has a lot of Hispanics, Whites and Blacks as do the sections of Terrytown, Gretna, and Harvey south of the Westbank expressway (but close to the expressway). Some other parts of the Westbank have a good Black/White mix too, as well as some Asians too. The Gentilly, Broadmoor, and Algiers parts of New Orleans have sections with a good Black and White mix. Some of the Uptown neighborhoods along the river, Carrollton/riverbend area, freret area, and Milan area also have a Blake and White mix but certain parts are not that safe but are gentrifying. All of these areas are fairly safe (though can depend on the exact parts you live in). It really all depends on where you want to live in the metro area and what type of community you want but these are all a lot closer than 40 minutes from New Orleans. There are also safer areas but they will likely be less diverse. The best shopping is in Metairie, though, New Orleans is good for boutiques and such. Boating/fishing is popular for outdoor activities, along with other water related activities, as are the big parks in New Orleans, or even randomly walking around the city is nice.
