One thing I have heard is that a lot of women don't like the book because he is such a slob, but it's truly a great book, and won a Pulitzer for a reason. Funny as hell too.
I love this book. And while reading it I imagined Jack Black as Ignatius with Bette Midler as his mother.

My imagination sometimes does weird stuff when reading books.

I think Jack Black was actually rumored at one time to be an actor for the part. They've been trying to make a movie out of it for 30 years.

What's up with Bette? Can't remember the last time I saw or heard something about her. I'm not exactly her target audience, but everyone likes Bette Midler.

I'm reading it now - I haven't had a lot of time to get into it so I can't share whether I like it or not yet.

It's listed as "in development" on imdb.com, btw. It has a link to the preliminary cast but you need an IMDB account which I don't have. A Confederacy of Dunces - IMDb

Last I heard, Zach Galifianakis (sp?) was rumoured to play Ignatius. Jack Black would be an excellent choice too, though. Bette Midler would be excellent as his mother!

I love this book too - I've read it several times.

Tremble and Ennui by Nicaud is very chaotic, funny (especially the streetcar chapter), wild, reminded me of L'ecume des jours by Boris Vian (sorry, don't know the translation) which is a GREAT novel.

I'm biased but I believe that James Lee Burke is one of the greatest crime novelists of our time. Many of his books take place in New Orleans and Louisiana. Former NOPD Detective Dave Robicheaux and his partner Cletus Purcel are the protagonists in 20 of Mr Burke's books. The first novel is "Neon Rain". As someone who worked on the streets of New Orleans as a cop I think James Lee Burke's description of the neighborhoods of New Orleans and the dangerous people that often inhabit them and prey on victims are about as accurate as it gets. I've never recommended one of this man's novel's to someone that didn't enjoy it. They don't always make you feel good about the human species but in the end the good guys always win.

James Lee Burke - Bestselling Author
