Grand isle is louisiana to the core. Can't get that on any other beaches.

The answer is none. There are no good gulf beaches close to New Orleans.

The Gulf Shores-Orange Beach area near the Alabama/Florida line is probably the closest good beach.

It's like an hour to MS from New Orleans, and then take the ferry. Would make for a nice day trip. But count on the weather being cool (possibly rainy) and the water being cold as well. I went to the Gulf beaches in April and the water was still cold.
The ferry doesn't run very often if at all in the winter.

How long is the ferry ride, and are there nice hotels there? Sounds like a nice long weekend in the summer.

There are no hotels on Ship Island. It is a National Seashore (federal land), very natural with only sand and surf.

You have to bring everything you need for ship island. Like bring a wagon with supplies. During the summer they sell very overpriced water and I think hamburgers. Is a day trip picnic kind of thing.

Seems like a long drive for a day trip, but you guys talked me into it. I think I'll try it out this summer.

Bring one of those pop up shelter/tents. I think I would fry with just a hat!
