Another thing I would suggest is try to find a place with a driveway for your car. I live in the university area and I park on the street in front of my house. My car has been hit 3 times in 5 years just parked overnight. One time it was $5000 worth of damage. Between the bad streets and the crazy drivers it's hard to keep a nice car.

Default Streets

Thanks for this advice - I will definitely keep it in mind if I decide that NOLA is my new home. I wonder if my insurance rates would go up just living there?

I'm almost positive your auto insurance rates will go up. Mine almost doubled when I moved here.

Your next step should be to just visit. It's such a unique place that it's difficult to describe accurately. Spend a couple of weeks there and you'll really understand the appeal. That would apply to any place you are considering, right?

Your insurance rates will go up, I promise. I drove for over 200,000 and 12 years without getting in any accident. I moved here in 2012... 20,000 miles in, some dump truck ran over my car because he wanted to avoid a draw bridge and made an illegal turn. That was the very first time I was involved in any collision whatsoever. People constantly run red lights and do stupid crap on the road. It's high for a reason.

Well the good thing about NOLA is that, unless you're in one of the suburbs (Slidell, Metairie, Kenner, etc), you don't really need a car. The city is very easy to get around by using the streetcar/buses or just walking.
