Any walkable convenient areas around New Orleans?

New Orleans definitely 100% is. Are there any older suburban commumities around the city, that were potentially pre-auto era, and also built to some degree, walkable and easy to get around..

If not, how about outlying towns within reasonable difference from the city?

Old Metiaire Rd has a stretch of older shops where you'll see people walking around, near Bonabell I think.

There's also Old Town Kenner I think it's called, never been.

Hammond, on the Northshore, has a nice little downtown. Restaurants, a theatre, pharmacy, bars, boutiques, etc are all available downtown. It's surprisingly active for a small town.

You're looking for Algiers Point. Across the river from downtown New Orleans, Algiers Point is a charming, walkable area full of historic homes, small shops, and eateries. http://algierspoint.org

Algiers Point looks gorgeous!!!!

Old Metiaire Rd...is that in Metiaire? I looked at google maps, and that seems to be where it led me....that street looks quite interesting on google maps...looks like row-home type of houses, which I like, and very well-built. Interesting. Looks purely residential though, but it was an interesting find, for sure.

Algier's Point is a part of the City of New Orleans, not a separate suburban community or outlying town.

Algiers, for all intents and purposes, is a separate community across the Mississippi River. Its only technically "New Orleans" due to being annexed in 1870...though your point is a valid one

Yes it is. It is mostly residential with a shopping center and a set of storefronts with a little parking.
