I passed by Lee Circle this morning and there was a group of people there waving confederate flags. I was really surprised to see that in this city. I am a transplant so maybe I just don't get it, but I did grow up in the South. I never thought a statue could stir up that much emotion. It's kind of sad to see that in this city. I'm sure there are people here who would disagree with me, but in my experience here, I haven't encountered much racial tension like you see in some other cities. Everyone seems to get along pretty well. I hope that doesn't change.

You must not read Nola.com comment sections.

Racial tension is just as high as any other city, possibly more in New Orleans.

Yes, I have read some of those comments, and regretted it afterwards. I have friends here from different races and nationalities, and this doesn't affect our relationships. Honestly, I was just surprised to see that here. I saw some of that in Georgia, but didn't expect it here.

It certainly effects the relationship between me and my best friend.
Why would it be any different? They have the same history as far as race. This is still the American south.

However I would assume that the people out there waving the flag all live in Chalmette, Covington, Kenner, or the westbank.

I hope you're right about them being from somewhere else. How does this affect your relationship with your friend? I guess it takes something like this to realize that we still have a long way to go.

I'm sure the vast majority are from outside city limits.

It's just something we never talk about, which is abnormal because we talk about practically everything else. Plus he votes red.

I gotcha. I hope that sometime in my lifetime all this stuff is not an issue. When I watch my daughter and her friends I have hope.

Sorry but I don't see it. We're merely 50 years removed from the Civil Rights Act. It's ingrained in our society.

Robert E Lee was a traitor to the USA. He was sworn to protect the USA but committed treason. He would also be considered a home grown terrorist in 2015, yet we have droves of morons who want to keep his image alive. The same morons who want to kill all terrorist but, try to preserve the statue of one.

Is that what they teach in schools now?
