Checked into a hotel on St. Charles last night near midnight that seems to have tighter security then Fort Knox. Will be here for a week (unless I decide to leave because I am unimpressed but that's another story), and I like how it is right on the streetcar line. The area seems beautiful to me.

Is it really as unsafe as the impression the hotel itself gives me?

Samantha, anything that isn't locked down and secured in New Orleans will be cleaned out, lol.

St. Charles is a long avenue. Where exactly are you on it? It goes from nice to very scary, depending on where you're at.

Which part of St Charles is very scary?

La Dump de Maison. 1319 St. Charles, nearby cross streets are Erato and Thalia. Three security guards for a hotel caught my attention as well as the extremely secure lobby area.

Don't think I am going to stay here all week but like I said that's another story. If someone wants to throw in a better hotel recommendation, feel free.

I know what you mean. The level of security that is available at many New Orleans hotels is both reassuring and alarming to me. As a native New Yorker, I'm used to visiting friends at their hotels and just being able to walk to the elevator and go up to their rooms. New Orleans is completely different in that regard. But I think they have good reason to be, perhaps due to past experiences with room thefts given all of the riffraff hanging around.

Yeah which part of St Charles is very scary?
That's the LGD so that's why, little more riff raff around but I wouldn't call it scary.

I am a New Yorker as well!
So I guess I am experiencing exactly what you did! Look it's nice to know I am so safe within the hotel but it makes you wonder, how far away from the hotel should I be walking! So far I have seen no reason to be concerned with this area. Going out today to enjoy my Sunday before I have to start focusing on the real reason I am here. (work)

You have no reason to be worried. Enjoy your stay.

The good thing is, and as you seem to have realized yourself, that if you take common sense safety precautions you should be fine. Note, New Orleans isn't like New York, where I would feel comfortable walking around large parts of the city with my iPhone or iPad out. Definitely don't do that in New Orleans. If you treat it as if you were walking through the streets of early 1990s NYC, you'll be fine
