I am organising a trip for a small group of active seniors with a 7-night stay in New Orleans over Mardi Gras next year. They are a lively bunch who will be coming back to their accommodation pretty late at night, and after quite a few drinks, so they will certainly not be flying quietly under the radar

I am currently holding an apartment at Cleveden Ave & S Rendon in Mid-City about 5 minutes walk from the Canal at Carrollton streetcar stop and I have a few questions:
  • Is this area safe enough for a group of European tourists ?
  • Is the streetcar ride down into the French Quarter safe ?
  • Is the streetcar convenient and suitable for active but relatively slow-moving folks ?

Thanks for any insight: I am a regular visitor to the US but have never been to New Orleans...

Use Google Earth street view for NOLA areas, I've found that to be very useful. That area seems OK using that tool.

Mid city is not the safest area. I am from the new Orleans area and I cannot vouch for it. Mid City has seen a spike in crime recently. The areas South of Canal and east of Carrollton are not the best. Closer to City Park is much better.

My take, late at night, a taxi door to door will be worth every penny spent, especially during Mardi Gras as they will be ripe pickings.
