Dealing with our oldest starting kg and going through the nola ritual of treating this like you would a collegiate admission - I grew up in Texas where you went to school in the district you were in and that made it easy. Anyway, we are on the waiting list for Lusher (which I haven't toured) and have heard amazing things about. We are pretty high up on the list so we are optimistic about his chances of getting in. But we need a backup school and even though my wife and I have never attended private school in our lives - we are seriously considering Newman.

Obviously cost is an issue but with some tightening, it wouldn't break our budget but we do have 2 kids and if we chose this route we are looking at $500k for a high school education for both. I guess my question is NOT if Newman is worth the money but rather what (if any) advantages does it have to Lusher? And all opinions are welcome but would especially like to hear what parents of kids who went to either think about all this. We have looked into other schools and have finalized our decision to these two - thanks in advance for any help!

I would choose Newman, if I could afford it, but remember there is more to going private that just tuition. A private school like Newman will open more doors when your son begins the college tour.

Have you ruled out Catholic/Episcopal schools?

This is probably going to be an upopular opinion to some, but send your kid to Newman if you can afford it and leave a spot at Lusher for a kid whose family can't afford the choice to go private.

My wife just said if you can afford the cost, Newman is the absolute best option. There are so many programs for students to take advantage of and gives them experiences you won't find anywhere else in the city.s

Nah, I don't agree. Newman is just one of many private schools that will provide you with an education (and connections).

Newman will look better on applications and resumes for the rest of their lives and is a great school. Definitely more prestigious.

What did you decide? We are now in the same boat, high on the waitlist at Lusher. In at Newman, and trying to decide... if we get Lusher, should we take it? Would love to hear your experience... thanks!
