It's my 70th birthday this year and since my husband and I have never been to New Orleans, I thought it would be fun to spend the big day there. It's the last week of September. Is that a good time to visit, weather-wise, in particular?

I know I could have put this in the travel forum, but I figured I'd get more responses from locals. Also, suggestions for how we might best spend 3 full days there would be much appreciated.

It's usually sunny and warm (or hot) then with mild nights.

There is an occasional threat of a hurricane but that varies year to year.

I would recommend the WWII Museum (4th best museum in the country), walking around the French Quarter, taking an airboat ride or visiting a plantation. That would do it.

^ I recommend Whitney plantation. I took my wife earlier this week and she loved it.

It will probably still be warm. I'd have a nice dinner at Muriel's or another fancy French Quarter restaurant or even a Natchez or Creole Queen dinner steamboat cruise in honor of the celebration.

I agree with this. Excellent suggestions.

You can never control the weather, September/October are the most active hurricane months in the Atlantic & Gulf, so just in case you might want a refundable option.

You can believe it will be hot and humid in September . If you could put it off until the temps moderate a bit you'll enjoy your visit more .

I would not recommend visiting New Orleans in September...the heat will be high, the humidity will be extreme. You will not be comfortable until the sun goes down.

I remember inviting family from L.A. to celebrate my birthday, which is in September...we went to Seafood Fest in Mid-City. It was miserable!! We weren't out there an hour before going back to our house and staying inside until dinner.

Then again, it's going to likely be 90+ degrees then, too.

I don't know if you took your trip yet, OP, but in addition to the French Quarter (which actually kind of scared me the first time 'cause no one warned me about the beads LOL), I really liked the Garden District. We did a walking tour that gave a lot of interesting information on the architecture of the homes and why the District style is different from the Quarter. We also did a bus tour that took us around and outside the city...packed a lot of good stuff into a couple-hour tour. And of course Cafe du Monde for beignets and latte.

I'd suggest late fall or early spring. New Orleans is still experiencing summer weather in sept.
