I was speaking to a N.O transplant in houston, and they asked me where in new orleans am i from. They just assumed lol..

I asked what makes them say that? And they said they know another a new orleans native when they see one. I said well im not from N.O. and they said oh well they thought i could be from the french quarter

Is that a could thing to be from the french quarter? It sounds classy lol

Well, when I spent 2 wks in New York (my only visit ever) a lot of the people there thought I was one of them. I certainly didn't dress like them, so I don't know. But all my life I've been told I have a New York or eastern accent, and I really don't (my parents were from Europe so maybe it's a slight accent thing). But one friendly cashier in a NY store was very surprised when I told her I didn't live there. I took no offense to any of it.

Who knows, huh?

LOL interesting story. Sounds to me like that person isn't really from New Orleans based on their assumption that you were from the Quarter...umm nobody's from the Quarter

I'm exaggerating, but honestly very few people these days actually grew up in the French Quarter. So much so that it sounds odd to assume that a complete stranger did....unless the person assuming doesn't know New Orleans that well and just threw out the easiest neighborhood to remember.

Marigny/Bywater(closest to the Quarter), Uptown, Mid-City, Gentilly, 7th Ward, 9th Ward, the East, Cross da River, Da Parish, Metairie, Lakeview...all common answers that make sense. The French Quarter?? No. Nobody asks if you're from the French Quarter

Sounds like a poor presumption on his behalf. I think it's difficult to determine what part of a city someone is from the way he did. Maybe he only remembered the French Quarter...

Thats like saying why do australians sound like english people.. the new orleans accent has been greatly influenced by new yorkers because a lot of them migrated back in the day
