Hey guys!

My fiance and I are joining Americorps after we get married in August. We are most likely joining programs in New Orleans.

Where should we start looking for housing? We are young college grads, love music... We need a house with a fenced in backyard for our two dogs.

Affordability is the biggest issue- Americorps is a volunteer organization, so our stipends will be very loooow. Any advice??

Thanks!

Mid-city neighborhood perhaps?

Americorps provides housing for its volunteers; if it didn't, volunteers would be homeless. I had a friend who was in Americorps and made about $800 a month. Obviously, money is not the reason behind joining the organization. But unless you have a lot of money (as in thousands) saved up, you should probably just live where Americorps puts you. I think in NOLA they put volunteers up in graduate dorms.

I'm in the process of working for Americorps and let me tell you it's not easy getting in.

I've had to send my resume twice and my letter "of inspiration"

I'm REALLY hoping it works out.

Check Craig's List for rentals. Many people post there since it's free. I don't know if the housing they provide would let you have your dog there.Metairie is generally safe but drive by the location in the late afternoon/early evening to see what it's like when folks come home!
