I have a friend whose husband is being transferred to New Orleans. She is an excellent SPED teacher.
I know most of the schools in NOLA are charter. How difficult will it be for her to get a teaching position there? Is it difficult to transfer her teaching license or is a license even necessary in the charters?

She shouldn´t have much trouble at all, so long as she is experienced and certified. I´m going through the motions myself, trying to come back Stateside after living and teaching overseas for almost 8 years. What I have learned by talking to fellow teachers is that most charters are willing to take good candidates who don´t yet have their licenses.

As far the the general process for getting a license in Louisiana, she should be able to get one through reciprocity no problem at all. It could be a provisional license and she may need to do coursework to get a proper one, but once again no sweat.

No one teaches to get rich, but know that New Orleans in particular doesn´t pay enough with the cost of living being what it is. I´m not sure where she would be placed on the salary scale, if all her years in another state will count or not, but they should. Charters might start at $45K, and the few conventional schools under the Orleans Parish School Board pay maybe $41K starting off...Jefferson Parish starts right around there as well.

She won't need to transfer certification right away, but they will probably want her to be willing and do it eventually. I don't think shell have any trouble.

Thank you. She has been teaching in Alabama so low salary expectations are understood. The main thing for her is working and keeping her license viable.
