So,
I'm thinking of getting my family (wife and kids 8 and 13) the weekend before the "real" Mardi Gras week. I just learnt that there is a name for it - Family Gras.

Is that just a marketing gimmick or is it worth making the trip ? I have been there with the boys twice on Mardi Gras and I have a good idea about what goes on during that week for comparison purposes.

On the other hand I see that there seems to be an organized weekend even in Metairie that has parades and concerts too... seems like a cool thing. Has anyone done this with the family and is that worth it ? Just fyi - I do not plan to shell out $125 for VIP seating.

More info:
We will plan to catch some uptown (Charles St) parades on Sunday if the Family Gras is for real and we will then end up spending Saturday near Metairie (seems like a Mad Hatters parade is going to be a first this year).

Thanks ye all in advance for the information / experiences / suggestions.

Yep - Family Gras is cool. It takes place every year in Metairie and my family loved it.

There's a grocery store parking lot right on the route, so get there early enough to back your vehicle right up to the street and enjoy!

Hello folks...

Just wanted to provide feedback after my visit.

We had a blast even if it was a week before Fat Tuesday - I think this is the best week for family with kids.
The crowds at the parades were lesser. We stayed in Metairie and walked from our hotel to a couple of parades. Very nice atmosphere.

The Family Gras event is good with younger kids, not for teenagers - they will be bored for the most part unless they like the concert lineup.
We got to see Billy Ray Cyrus up close - neat.

We were able to sneak into bourbon st in the night without the kids - its still crazy out there - but we all know that !!
