i left south africa 6 months ago as the crime rate is too high there and i did not want to be just another statistic. i have been living in an apt. close to transcontinental since i got here. last evening my apt was broken into and my laptop stolen. i am beside myself with worry. my 9 year old is traumatised. any suggestions on how we can stay safe in metairie?
i am also planning to buy a home in metairie? which areas are the safest?

We used to live in River Ridge. Not much crime at all to speak of. Sorry about what happened to you. Why did you chose to move to New Orleans from South Africa?

Old Metairie and the Whitney Heights area used to be safe, but no area is immune from break-ins. A loud dog and/or a security system are the best ways to safeguard against burglars.
