Hi there all, I just did a google search for New Orleans forums and this one came up so I thought I would give it a try!

Me and my boyfriend live here in Oklahoma city, OK and we are ready to make a move out of here! He has been there several times, as I have not. He absolutely loves it there and tells me often how wonderful it would be to live there and be a part of the culture that makes it so great!

We do not have any children and no reason why we could not just up and move,(which we plan to do), we are just waiting on the perfect time. I have been in touch with several employment prospects and don't really see any problems with finding a job there in accounting. He works in a warehouse driving a fork lift and has several years experience doing this, so I do not see it being an issue for him either.

His passion is cajun food and cooking, he wants to run his own diner or cafe one day and for some reason, he thinks that dream is more likely to come true for him there in New Orleans. He has never gone to school to be a chef, but the guy has natural talent, he is an artist in the kitchen and is very passionate about it.

If anyone wants to talk about New Orleans with me and what life is like there now, or has any tips on what kind of welcome to expect as outsiders to a community such as that, please do, I welcome all discussion about it, I would love to learn as much about the city as I can before we just jump up one day and show up!(which may be very soon!)

I moved here a year ago roughly.
First off, there are cons but nothing that isn't easily overcome but I had to adjust
1. roaches, aka plametto bugs. HUGE HUGE HUGE mega roaches that live outside and like to come in to look for food and something cooler if need be. First time I saw one in the kitchen I nearly passed OUT. Now I'm a bit more adjusted, eating crawfish often helps (har har).
2. heat. The day heat is about what I grew up with in Atlanta but the night. go out at 11PM and it can still be 95F out with 90% humidity. It doesnt really bother me until mid to late August, then you really start getting pissed off about it. Comes with the territory.
3. Crime. It is easy to live in fear if you allow yourself to (and it's easy to be willfully ignorant about it as well). Crime is very bad but I haven't had a problem yet, and I get around just fine. There is too much to see, do and experience to live in fear here.

Suggestions:
1. If you get the chance to take a Louisiana history class at School of Continuing Studies take it! You cannot make this stuff up. The history of this city is WILD.
2. Crystal Hot sauce. Put it on almost anything and everything. Kick it up a notch!
3. Walk around (during the day especially) even through the CBD, pay attention to the architectural details. Amazing.
4. Go outside your neighborhood. I meet too many who live Uptown and will not go downriver of Canal, and too many in the Quarter and Marigny who will not go Uptown.

This place is amazing, but it isn't perfect; if anything it's pretty messed up. And if you move here get involved. Don't take No for an answer from anyone.

Wow, that was refreshing! It is wonderful to hear someone be real about it...lol I am pretty capable of adapting to my surroundings wherever I go, this won't be my first adventure, I have lived in Detroit and St. Louis so I can avoid the criminals pretty well, or make friends with them...lol j/k!
Thank you for the tips!
