I saw on another thread some folks were talking about NOLA being expensive. I know certain areas have pretty high rent compared to before the storm, but what exactly what makes it so expensive? What other than rent is expensive? And do you that will change ever?
Please help!

LOW WAGES(historically this never changes here) + High rent ripoffs+ Gas price$+ expensive groceries and household supplies= poverty in Nola.
Certain areas before HK that were pricey.... ie Garden District, Lakeview ect. NOW....every available apt/home in and around NOLA. 1/2 double shotgun 2 bedroom unit in central New Orleans before HK was about $450-$500/month...NOW same dwelling $800-$1000/month

well the nice areas were expensive before the storm, now after the storm it is more expensive because of supply and demand. people moving back +shortage of housing = greedy landlords

Hon, everything has gone up since the storm, insurance, groceries, housing, (re-built homes are going for $50k more in my neighborhood), and even wages in some cases. Wages, however, are falling back down towards where they were pre-k, but the other things don't seem to be falling along with wage rates.

No one can forsee if things will change or where the area will be once the dust settles. We're just waiting for the ride to be over...

Large swathes of the city itself are still untouched since Katrina. Which means huge numbers of housing units off the market and a great demand for what's left.

Looking at pre and post Katrina rent prices will make you head spin how much money people are making.
