I will be relocating to the NO area in the near future, and I'm trying to figure out where to live. I am considering LaPlace but don't know which areas are safe and which aren't. Also considering Kenner.

Can anybody suggest some neighborhoods or apt. complexes to look at? I have seen ads for stuff I can afford in the Belle Point, Sugar Ridge, Cambridge, New Era, Carrollwood and Riverlands subdivisions -- is anybody familar with these?

FYI, I am female, married, with a 2-year-old. I am open to either renting or buying. Not looking for anything spectacular, just fairly well-maintained and safe.

THanks!

Don't know much about LaPlace, but if you want to stay in Kenner, stay in North Kenner north of I10. Zip 70065.

Default Mixed

I suggest avoiding LaPlace. New Era and Cambridge have some crime problems. Belle Terre is nice - There are a lot of large expensive homes, but there may be some 3 bed / 2 bath homes less than $200K. The public school system is also horrible in Laplace and all of East St. John Parish.

If you consider Kenner, as a general rule of thumb, stay north of West Esplanade Ave. Driftwood subdivision is on the Northeast quadrant of the Williams and West Espanade Ave intersection. Most of the homes look okay, but the downside is that they are 30+ years old. A 2000 square foot home may run about $220 - 230K. Again, most of the schools aren't that great either.

You may want to consider St. Charles Parish as it is between Kenner and Laplace. The Ormond area is in Destrehan on the East Bank of the Parish and Willowdale is in Luling on the Westbank of the parish. Positives: 1) It is family friendly, 2) Most of the houses are far away from the industires/petrochemical facilities, 3) Decent public school system since the parish receives quite a bit of tax revenue from the industries present in the parish. Negatives: 1) Cost of housing still relatively high for the Deep South - $225K for about a 1700 square foot home. 2) Politics somewhat corrupt, although not as bad as Orleans and Jefferson Parish. 3) Lacks some ammenities found in other suburbs such as movie theater, nice restaurants, shopping malls, etc.

Default I think kenner is better

I live in an apartment in Kenner with my husband and 4 year daughter. I live on Loyola dr. right behind the Kenner Walmart. The apartment is called the Lake of Chateau Estates. There is a north and south one. We pay 1300 a month for a 2 bedroom. It is a gated community and has lakes, swimming pools, tennis courts and you also can rent movies in the rental office. I love it here so does my daughter. There are ducks all around. What is bad living in Kenner is the noise from the hospital right across the street a night, the mexicans have gotten bad, some traffic but it close to everything. With gas being so high and everything so close I fill up twice a month. I have worked in Laplace and didnt like it. Traffic was the worst and it has really gone down hill. Everyone in the apartment complex is nice and the office people. Everything is kept up well. I hope I have helped you out.
