Consider Carrollton (Audubon Park and Zoo, Tulane, St. Charles streetcar, shops / restaurants, dog park at the levee, relatively high ground).

What do apartments run in some of these places? I'm a 23-year-old single female seriously considering a move to NOLA in the next couple of years. I don't want to be stuck in a gated community, but I don't want to be in an area where I can't walk down the street to a coffee shop in broad daylight, either. I've been to NOLA many times so I'm not a stranger to the city, but I don't know what's a reasonable rate for rental properties in the various neighborhoods. I would love to be in a vibrant, artsy area with lots of local shops and music, etc. Lots of people my age if possible. I do know that the French Quarter will almost certainly be way too expensive, and Central City and the Ninth Ward are dangerous. So I guess that leaves Uptown (District 3), Mid-City (4), Lakeview (5), Gentilly (6), Bywater (7), and Algiers (12). I don't know much about New Orleans East districts or English Turn. If I'm doing them a terrible disservice by leaving them off my list, let me know.

My husband is there on temporary work assignment and we are trying to find him a fully furnished, all utilities included, place to rent on a month to month basis. He won't have much time to enjoy NOLA. He is not really the sight seeing type anyway, unless I am with him. So our main focus is crime, safety and commute times. He will have some work in NOLA, but most of it will be in Baton Rouge at this time. Does anyone have any suggestions on where he should look? What would the commute be like between NO and BR?

I used to live in the CBD, there are plenty of restaurants and bars in walking distance, including the French Quarter. There are also a lot of art galleries in the neighborhood. Uptown is a quick cab ride, I used to live near Emerils so getting a cab was never a problem. Many of the apartment complexes have garage parking. I now live on the Northshore and I do miss being downtown.
