Hi!
My friends and I are planning a trip to New Orleans for Christmas.
I was just wondering if anyone of you out there could give us some pointers.
We're basically looking for a cheap place to stay ($20-$30/night) for about 2 weeks.
We would also like to know what's fun to do around that time of the year in New Orleans.
Thanks! Have a good one!

Not sure what you can get for that kind of money besides roach motels. Look online for B&Bs, some of them might be in that price range.

Look online for someone who is willing to rent you a room in their house. Surprisingly, some do that.
SouthernBelleInUT is right; for that price you will get a roach motel.

Good luck, be safe, and have a good time.

Definately go to City Park for Christmas in the Oaks and look into seeing one of the bonfires that will be lit to guide Papa Noel on Christmas Eve (about 1/2-1 hr drive out of the city). Definately look into hostels; I'm afraid that anything you're going to find in the $20-30 will be on Airline Hwy and THAT would be scary.

Christmas is a great time in New Orleans. There are tons of things to do all around the city, and it can be very inexpensive.

Is your per night a per room cost or per person? The hotels are very cheap in December; they are called Papa Noel rates. Check Christmas New Orleans Style | Travel this Winter and Get Holiday Season Deals on Hotels, Dining and Attractions for the Whole Family (http://www.neworleansonline.com/promos/2008/christmas/ - broken link) for rates. They are giving away restaurant gift certificates with rooms booked.

As for things to do - I second the Celebration in the oaks recommendation. Take the trolley to City Park to see it and make sure on the return trip to stop at Angelo Brocato's for hot chocolate or an espresso and something sweet.

Free concerts at Jackson Square really get you in the spirit.

There is a list of all of the events at 2008 Christmas New Orleans Style

They decorate with lights, some have a moving display or a recorded story. Very pretty. Before Katrina, you could drive through these huge oak trees all decorated with lights. Now, you walk throuigh the area by the conservatory.

NOLA is one of the most recognized cities in the U.S.A. that "go all out" for the Holidays!!! They Even made It Known On the travel channel and many others....I rather doubt that you will find a foom for less than 75-100$ per night thru the holidays or during any festive good weather time of year. And even then I think I'm being too kind with my guess...As I have looked into many of the hotel accomodations in the downtown areas(in my dreams!!!!!) hahaha!

Try Bed and Breakfast listings online. I found a nice place in Savannah for about 1/2 the hotel rates. N.O. does have them b/c my daughter and her at-the-time BF stayed in one a few years ago. A VERY nice house in a very nice area - totally safe. Not sure if the neighbors knew what the owners were doing!
