I'm going to be visiting New Orleans in January along with three friends (all of us for the first time). We are beyond excited. We're all 19-22 and not at all rich, so are there any great places to eat that aren't that expensive?

We're staying at the Royal St. Charles Hotel, does anyone know anything about this place and the places around it?

Any safety precautions we should take?

We're hoping we won't have to drive too much, that we can walk or use public transportation, is that do-able?

Are there bars/clubs etc. that people under 21 can get into? Is that a big issue here? Because half of us will be over 21 and half us under. Any good jazz club recommendations?

What do locals do for fun? I don't really want to do tourist-ish stuff the whole time.

We'll be checking out Prospect .1 while we're there. (I'm art obsessed)
Has anyone checked it out already?

I wonder if that was something else before? The location is good and you can walk all over the Quarter and the river front from there. You can catch the streetcar to go Uptown to the zoo, the college area, Carrollton area. Don't know about drinking age, don't know what Prospect ! is. Sorry!

Ajax Oyster si good, many of the casual places in the Quarter are reasonable and all have menus in the windows so you can check it out. You have to have coffee and beignets at the Square.
