I have been in Houston since 1990 (in grade school). It has a good economy and nicely priced real estate but I never could make it my home.

Now I have a family of my own and am overcome with nostalgia every time I visit relatives back home (a few times a year). Houston just doesn't have HEART or a personality like New Orleans does! I would much rather my children grow up with the blessings of extended family and the spirit of New Orleans than the... whatever it is you get when you grow up in Houston. Blah grey concrete freeways and mind-numbing traffic, I guess.

My husband and I make a respectable income (His: $90k, Hers: $50k) but it seems hard to be able to duplicate that in NOLA. Actually we'd need to angle for a bit more since a comparable house has double the price tag in Metairie than in Houston and its outskirts. The job hunt is horrifyingly bleak so far. I am a graphic designer specializing in digital retouch, and my husband is a project manager for commercial construction specializing in stone & masonry.

Is there any hope for us? I am absolutely dying to come back. I can't take Houston for another year.

You will not make that type of money. Settle for less and be happy. Money isn't everything.

my roommate is an amazing graphic artist and he barely makes $15 an hour.
If it wasn't for his freelance work, he'd be screwed.
