One of the top murder rates in the entire world.
Housing is expensive and old with little in the way of the amenities you'd get in other Southern cities.
Job situation isn't great unless you want to work in the low-wage food/beverage/hospitality industry.
City is fun though.

Your right NOLA is OLD, but what do you expect its almost 300 years old. Its older than ANY Southern Major City. That's like comapring a grandmother to a grandaughter, the grandaugter OUGHT to look BETTER. Anyway NOLA does have many amentities and are steadily adding more, everytime I look up something is being built or some NATIONAL retailer is moving in. While you are correct we have a good ways to catch NEWER cities like Dallas,Atlanta,Miami etc. but it sure looks like NOLA is headed in the right direction.

Also to comment you made is not neccessarily true. There are many people in the city with good jobs that pay well MOSTLY people with degrees or some type of trade. A lot of those people in the service industry/hospitality industry DO NOT have a college degree or trade (a skill) and that's not a knock. At least they have a job and are making an honest living. Also while Tourism is a 6-9 BILLION idustry we do have to diversify WHICH is happening slowly but surely. You must not read have read any of the recent articles the last few years about how the NOLA business climate is changing and changing rather quickly. Business folks are started to take notice you should too .

Yep. We've gotten all kinds of accolades over the past few years as far as being a great place to do business. We've also been one of the fastest growing cities for the past few years, which can't be accounted for solely by Katrina returnees. I meet tons of young transplants- the "best and the brightest" that we once hemorrhaged to Dallas, Atlanta, etc. The economy is growing and New Orleans is "hot". Oh, and the murder rate fell last year and the new year has started out even lower- we had 26 murders by this time in 2012 and only 7 this year.

Good post. Tourism is also on a steady pace upward. The new airport terminal is amazing, the VA, abundance of residential projects just within the CBD, etc. I could go on and on.
