They had completely different issues on the coast with Katrina....we had 250,000 homes flooded and over 1,500 people died in New Orleans. Even though the feds have assisted in many ways, the recovery you see in New Orleans with the over 100,000 homes and 40,000 businesses renovated from the floods in the past 3 1/2 years were handled with the bare hands of almost all locals involved with Katrina recovery. We've had many volunteers, and some out of state contractors, but, a vast majority has been handled with our own hands. And I've put some wear on my own hands even though I didn't flood---I volunteer to build playgrounds in the city.

From the day I drove into the City and had to escape a likely mugging as I sat in my vehicle reading a city map, I determined to leave as soon as I could. And regarding unanswered prayer; like Jonah who spent three days and three nights in the damp bowels of a great "fish", I too thought my prayers were going unanswered. What I learned is that God sometimes says "no" and sometimes he bides his time until we we learn the lesson he seeks to teach us. In short, I would worry less about the bowels of the beast and worry more about my own soul.
I lived there at about the same time. I worked for the 1984 World's Fair in marketing.

During my year there, I was alone, lived alone, slept alone. I went out at night to bars (mostly in Fat City because the French Quarter was too touristy for me). I never felt fearful (young and stupid, probably). I was never afraid, never wary. Even the night I took the wrong exit off the freeway and ended up UNDER the freeway in a seedy part of town.

Then years later, I went back. I had been living in small town midwest *white* America and I was very uncomfortable. Call me racist but when you aren't used to black people, it unnerves you to have so many around you. Especially when you are bombarded with crime statistics that point to "minorities" as being the chief cause of crime. True or not. I make no judgments, I am just adding my two cents.

There are problems everywhere in this country. I don't have any solutions. It is a shame though, that you cannot enjoy something so grand and beautiful as New Orleans. SO full of majesty and history. It is one of the finest places on earth. Contaminated with the sewer of humanity.

Even though the damage their situation is considerably different like Alon said, those on the MS Coast would have a lot more to than a new bridge and a casino if they were more dedicated than those in New Orleans.

I'm not downing anyone and no offense to MS, but to say that they are more self-reliant and dedicated to recovery is CRAZY. Really, get your mind right.

Katrina was a huge blow to both LA and MS. No person's struggle can be compared or labeled worse than the other since each person is affected in their own personal way. We all have a long way to go and we all struggle with it in one way or another.

Back to the point. gaflsc can you please elaborate on this self-reliance and determination. What did they do that we didn't? What didn't we do that they did?

Actually, it does. It is alot easier for someone with a load of disposable income to rebuild a destroyed home than it is for somebody who grew up in a failing, impoverished public school system, and was not motivated to go to college and get a high paying job. Somebody without a vehicle who lives month to month on a small salary and maybe a welfare check.

Like I said, income has alot to do with it. Why do you think Lakeview has pretty much come back, but many poorer sections of the city are still in pieces.

You know, when I mentioned the whole self reliance thing in my post before, I meant the state in general. It has always been a gimmie state and has been for all my life here. Its not just new orleans, it is everywhere here. This is probably one of the most socialistic states in the US. I suppose it could be due to the French influence, but theres really no excuse for a state to rely so much on others. Especially since Louisiana basically pisses away all of its funding without actually fixing anything. Again, theres a good reason why we rank 50th in almost every major national factor. I love this state to death, but Im not ignorant to its faults.
Also, Im not saying missisippi handled Katrina much better either. Ive been down that way and it is still obvious that a major disaster occurred there.

You are right about LA being a "gimmie" state and not getting anything done. I've probably commented on the forum about it myself.

What caught my attention was gaflsc insinuating that MS was more determined and self-reliant.

People in MS even say it and their recovery probably moving at the same pace as ours considering how extreme their damage was. They face the same hurdles we do. It's just that they never get any attention. MS usually ranks 1 in everything bad and 50 in everything good with LA coming in 2 and 49 respectively.

People in TX say it, when Gustav came, comments like "blow up the bridge (Sabine River) so they can't come over here." or "This is TEXAS, we can take care of ourselves!" were common in the Houston area. Anybody been to Galveston or read the Chronicle lately? hmmm.

::takes deep breath:: Ok I'm calm. Yeah AZ I have been working a little too hard lately lol

Crime happens everywhere. Some more gruesome than others, but it is unfortunately present everywhere in our country.

I am planning to move to NOLA in three years. I visited for the first time last September between Hurricanes Gustav and Horacio (I think that was the name) and fell in love immediately. The City was empty due to the hurricane threats, but I still felt its soul through the folks who stayed behind, music, cuisine, art, and even the weather. Yes, the weather.

It is a great city, and I'm excited to relocate there.
